Health issues always have a way of presenting themselves when you least expect them. This is especially true when you’re on business travel. Whether you need emergency dental work, have been involved in an accident, or simply have a bad headache, the last thing you want is to be tongue-tied when you need medical treatment in a foreign country.

Getting medication

In Germany, the Apotheke is the primary source for prescription medication and small medical devices. The Apotheke also offers a wide selection of non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, nose sprays, and vitamin supplements. But that’s where the inventory stops. Personal articles such as toilet paper, hair brushes, deodorants, hair colouring, etc., are found in the Drogerie.

In Canada, the UK, and the US, the complete spectrum of prescription, non-prescription, and over-the-counter medication, as well as personal articles, is offered under one roof.

prescription = requires written prescription from a doctor and can only be filled at the pharmacist’s counter

non-prescription = can be purchased anywhere and in any shop

over-the-counter = requires no prescription, but can only be filled at the pharmacist’s counter

In the UK, this is referred to as the chemist’s. In Canada and the US, this is the drug store or pharmacy, but these days most supermarkets have their own in-house pharmacies as well. Separate pharmacy chains in Canada and the US also have drive-through windows for filling prescriptions.

Visiting the doctor
When you visit a doctor, the first concern is always payment. In the UK and in Canada, where national health plans are strong, you often need to do no more than present verification of your insurance in Germany. This generally takes the form of a certificate or card that confirms in English that you are insured in Germany and that services in foreign countries are covered.
This is a more difficult issue in the US because most people have private medical insurance, and many have none. Doctors in the US are therefore quite careful. If you don’t have insurance through a recognized American insurance company, you’ll probably be asked to pay in full on the spot. The best advice when travelling to the US is to take out a separate, short-term medical insurance policy with an American company. This is good advice when travelling in any foreign country, because such policies usually cover extraordinary costs involved with hospital stays, ambulances, and medically assisted transport back to Germany — items that are often not covered by your normal health insurance.
