Using do
Do is used to describe general, unspeci-fied action. Make is not used to describe general action.
What are you doing at the moment?
Incorrect: What are you making at the moment?
Don\'t worry about locking up. I\'ll do it. Incorrect: I\'ll make it.
Mr Snowdon does the same thing every time he presents to the higher-ups.
Incorrect: Mr Snowdon makes the same thing ...
We did a lot while we were there. Incorrect: We made a lot...

A f ew common expressions always use do:
Excuse me, John, but could you do me a favour?
After we\'ve reviewed the theory, we\'ll do some exercises.
Meredith has just done a training course
in C#.
I really dislike doing the homework associ-ated with each new project.
Some of our clients will be doing an exam
here next week.
My husband stays at home and does the housework.

Do is commonly used with words ending in -thing:
Can\'t you do anything about the current situation?
Let\'s do something about the situation before the end of today.
Do is also combined with some when used with words ending in -ing:
I did some thinking about your proposal last night and have a few comments.
She\'s going to need to do some serious recuperating over the Christmas holiday.

Using make
If the intended meaning is produce or create, the correct word to use is make, despite that fact that the act of creating or producing something is an activity:
My secretary makes all of my flight res-ervations.
Letros Corporation makes ballpoint pens that never run dry.
All of the equipment we sell is made in France.
He made an off-colour joke at the Christ¬mas party last night.

A few common expressions always use make:
He\'s made his bed; now he’ll just have to lie in it.
I made a mistake.
Serge made an appointment to see his
manager on Friday.
I\'m sorry, I need to make a phone call.
Can you make a list of your issues and e-mail them to me?
Something down the hall is making a loud noise.
We \'re making money. We \'re making a profit. Could you make a suggestion ? I never seem to make the right decision. We should make an exception this time. He certainly makes a lot of excuses. They haven\'t made any progress.

Exceptions
The word photograph uses the word take instead of make:
Marketing has asked me to take a pho¬tograph of each of our products for our Web site.

Become and Get
While we\'re on the subject of common er-rors, here\'s a short overview of the use of become and get that will hopefully help you eliminate any errors you may be making.
The German word bekommen is very similar in sound and spelling to the English become. Unfortunately, this is where the similarity ends. These words are actually false friends.

Translating bekommen
The word bekommen is translated using the word get:
Ich bekam einen neuen Drucker. -> I got a new printer.
Wann bekomme ich die Pizza, die ich bestellt habe?
-> When do I get the pizza I ordered?
Incorrect:
I became a new printer. ( This means you were a person and now you are a printer ).
When do I become the pizza I ordered?

When to use become
The word become is usually used to trans-late werden:
Es wird dunkel.
-> It\'s becoming dark.
Es wurde klar, dass sie uns den Auftrag nicht erteilen würden.
-> It became clear that they wouldn\'t be giving us the order.
Ich möchte Business Coach werden. -> I\'d like to become a business coach.
Er wurde bekannt als führender Wirt¬schaftsexperte.
-> He became well-known as a leading expert on the economy.
