Grammatik auf Englisch - Future Continuous

Schlagwörter: English, Grammatik, Future, Lernen, OWAD

Last month we reviewed the future simple tense and the be going to form of future constructs. This month, we examine the future continuous tense.

Whereas the simple future is used to represent an action that takes place in the future, the future continuous is used to represent an action that starts and continues in the future:

The future continuous has two different forms:

• will be doing

• be going to be doing

Unlike the future simple, these forms can usually be used interchangeably.

will be doing form

will be + present participle

Examples:

Nancy will be helping her with that this month.

Will he be meeting with them during lunch?

Will my baggage be waiting for me when I arrive?

be going to be doing form

am/is/are + going to be + present participle

Examples:

Nancy is going to be helping her with that this month.

Is he going to be meeting with them during lunch?

Is my baggage going to be waiting for me when I arrive?

As with other tenses, certain verbs cannot be used in any continuous tense, including the future continuous.

Incorrect: John will be believing the work day is 10 hours long after his first project meeting.

Correct: John will believe the work day is 10 hours long after his first project meeting.

As mentioned last month in our discussion of future simple, it is incorrect to use any future form in phrases beginning with expressions of time like before, after, while, etc.:

Incorrect: While he is going to be flying to visit the new potential partner in India, our controller will be reviewing their financial statements.

Instead of using the future continuous, use the present continuous:

Correct: While he is flying to visit the new potential partner in India, our controller will be reviewing their financial statements.

Other uses of the future continuous

Interruptions
The future continuous is also used to represent a continuing action in the future that is interrupted by a shorter action (in the simple present tense) or by a specific time event:

I will be visiting our largest customer while he is in town.

Jennifer is going to be organizing the event, should you have any questions.

Our driver will be waiting for you at the gate when you arrive.

Henry will be working closely with Bernard as long as nothing urgent comes up.

Our legal people will be finalizing the contracts at 3 PM.

By the time you send me that report, I’ll already be flying to Japan.

There’s simply not enough time left. By the time they start the meeting, the documents they need will still be being printed.

Note: The passive voice is rarely used with the future continuous tense.

Parallel actions The future continuous is also used to represent actions in the future that are happening in parallel. An interruption may also be involved:

While I am reviewing the case, my colleague will be filing an injunction and the police will be contacting the family.

While she is covering the phones, I’ll be handling the arriving visitors and Johanna will be escorting them to the presentation theatre.

At exactly two, I’ll be speaking with our London office, Jeremy will be hosting a webinar, and Lothar will be enjoying a MaiTai on the beach.
