Grammatik auf Englisch - Ob oder wenn?

In many Business English books, if and whether are given little attention and are treated as equivalents. They are not. To the native speaker’s ear, whether lends one’s English a level of grace not achievable with if.


Introducing questions

Both whether and if can be used to introduce yes/no questions within a sentence:

Will James be going to the seminar?

I don’t know if James will be going to the seminar.

I don’t know whether James will be going to the seminar.

Here it’s simply a matter of preference. Both if and whether are acceptable.

Rule

Both if and whether can be used to introduce a yes/no question. In this case, if is more common, and whether sounds more formal.


Introducing questions with multiple possibilities

Rule

When introducing a question with two or more possibilities, use whether:

Will we be pumping more money into the modernisation effort going on in our British facility, or will we be consolidating all of our manufacturing in Slovakia?

Our CEO has still not decided whether we will be pumping more money into the modernisation effort going on in our British facility or if we will be consolidating all of our manufacturing in Slovakia.

Would you rather set the room up, greet visitors or manage the cloak room?

When I got there, I had to decide whether I wanted to set the room up, greet visitors or manage the cloak room.


Additional nuances

Rule

Without regard to the type of question you introduce, always use whether after a preposition.

We decided to look into whether we should hire an intercultural trainer.

We talked about whether we should attend the IBX tradeshow this year.

Rule

Without regard to the type of question you introduce, always use whether before an infinitive.

Morris Williams considered whether to quit on the spot or wait until the end of the project before tendering his resignation.

Janice Streeson can’t seem to decide whether to purchase the new office building now or to wait until the real estate market becomes more stable.

Rule

Whether is preferred when using the verb to discuss.

We discussed whether we should hire the ex-CEO of Timeport Consulting.

The development team discussed whether we should outsource the technical documentation effort.

Rule

If no rule seems to apply, use if in informal speaking situations and in informal email. Use whether in formal speech, in formal emails and in paper-based business correspondence.


Or not

Often, native speakers will add or not after the word whether, and sometimes after the word if:

I don’t know whether or not James will be going to the seminar.

Charles didn’t know if he should say yes or not.

When I got there, I had to decide whether or not I wanted to set the room up, greet visitors or manage the cloak room.

Because a question already implies or not, adding these words explicitly is redundant. In the case of the first and second examples, the result is unnecessary wordiness. In the case of the third example, the result is incorrect because or not implies a yes/no scenario.

Rule

Do not add or not when using if or whether. It’s a bad habit.
