Grammatik auf Englisch - >Unechte< BedingungssätzeSchlagwörter: Grammatik auf Englisch, Englisch Grammatik, Englische Grammatik, Englisch Grammar, Gramatik auf Englisch, Englisch Gramatik, Englische Gramatik, Englisch Grammar, Englisch Bedingungssatz, Englisch Bedingungssätze, Bedingungssatz auf Englisch, Bedingungssätze auf Englisch, Englischer Bedingungssatz, Englische Bedingungssätze We continue last month\'s examination of the conditional mood by taking a look at sentences that use \"unreal conditions\" to express conditions that cannot or will not happen.
Conditional sentence formation
Sentence formation using unreal conditions is the same as sentence formation using real conditions:
Pattern 1: condition, result
(a comma follows the condition)
Pattern 2: result condition
( no comma separates the result from the condition )
Present unreal conditionals
Present unreal conditionals are used to talk about what you would do in situations that are impossible or completely imaginary.
The correct structure is:
If... simple past,... would verb ...
0R
... would verb ... if... simple past.
Will, can, shall and may
In present unreal conditionals, will, can, shall and may take the forms would, could, should, ought to and might in the result clause.
If Belinda took the lead, we might be able to marshal our telemarketing troops in a single day and get the calling process underway in three ( days ).
Tip!
When is never used in present, past or future unreal conditionals.
Verbs commonly used in the condition: had, knew, lived, worked, went, didn\'t have/know/work/go, was, were, could.
Would can only be used if willingness is being expressed: If she would study more, ...
Caution
In the condition clause of unreal conditionals, always use the plural form were instead of was - even if your subject is singular:
If he were promoted, he would get a raise.
You may hear native speakers use was, but it is grammatically incorrect and sounds like a serious error.
Examples
If Esther spoke better English, she would get more out of our monthly meetings.
I could be more productive if I participated in fewer online conferences.
Q: Where would you live if you relocated to our London office?
A: I would live in the city.
Past unreal conditionals
Past unreal conditionals are used to describe how things would have been different if the condition were other than what actually occurred. This form\'s structure is:
If... past perfect,... would have
+ past participle ...
0R
... would have +
past participle ... if... past perfect.
Will, can, shall and may
In past unreal conditionals, will, can, shall and may take the forms would have, could have, should have, ought to have and might have in the result:
If I had had more time, I could have spent more time helping assemble that proposal.
They might have come to the annual company picnic if they hadn\'t flown to Munich this morning.
Examples
If William\'s presentation hadn \'t had such a strange slant, they would have purchased much more than they did.
Elizabeth would have owned up to the mistake if she had had more sense.
Future unreal conditionals
Future unreal conditionals are used to describe what you would do in the future if the condition were to come true. However, it is understood that the condition will not or cannot come true. It has three forms:
The \"simple present\" form
This form looks exactly like the present unreal conditional form and is the standard form for expressing future unreal conditionals. Refer to column 1 for the correct structure and examples. Imagine the future feeling as you review the examples.
The \"were - would be\" form
Use this form when you want to place additional stress on the fact that the condition takes place in the future.
This form\'s structure is:
If... were + present participle ...,
would be + present participle.
0R
... would be + present participle ...
if... were + present participle.
Examples
If I were attending the CEO\'s executive conference ( next week ), I\'d be debriefing with my staff today to ensure I\'m well prepared.
If I weren\'t preparing for the server upgrade ( next Tuesday ), I\'d be assisting with the inventory process today.
The \"were going to\" form
Use this form to place stress on the fact that the condition is an imaginary intention or plan in the future. The correct structure is:
If... were going to + verb,
... would be + present participle ...
0R
... would be + present participle ...
if... were going to + verb.
Examples
If Mr Bruckner were going to announce the shutdown of our Leeds facility (tomorrow ), he would be contacting the media today.
Mr Bruckner would be experiencing serious financial pressure if he were not going to shut down our Leeds facility ( tomorrow ).
Will, can, shall and may
In future unreal conditionals, will, can, shall and may take the forms would, could, should, ought to and might in the result:
If Barack Obama were going to propose another economic stimulus package, his opponents would be having a field day with him.
