Some nouns are always plural and must always be followed by plural verbs, while some nouns are always singular and must always be followed by singular verbs.
Plural words with no singular forms
Some nouns can be used to talk about specific groups in society, e.g., the young, the old, the elderly, the blind, the homeless, the disabled, the rich, the poor, the unemployed, the sick. Many others can be used in a general sense, including the good, the bad and the ugly. You can recognise these because they are adjectives being used as nouns. They are considered plural and take a plural verb
The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
The homeless have been protesting all morning.
Only the strong survive.
Nationality adjectives ending in –ch, and -sh ( except Czech ) used as nouns are also plural: the British, the Dutch, the Spanish and the Welsh, for example:
The English defeated the French at the battle of Agincourt.
The English are interesting.
To talk about a specific person or people, however, we use the singular form ending in -man or -woman or the plural ending in -men or -women ):
There are many Englishmen in New York.
The Englishwoman is very nicely dressed, don’t you think?
Things that come in pairs
Pants, jeans, trousers, tights, shorts, pyjamas, scissors, tweezers, shears, tongs, forceps, glasses, spectacles, binoculars and scales are always plural.
These trousers are too short. ( Not these trousers is … )
Your scissors need sharpening. ( Not your scissors needs … )
To make these items singular and countable we use a pair of:
I need a new pair of glasses.
I only have five pairs of jeans. ( Not five pair of jeans… )
Plural uncountable nouns
Some uncountable nouns are plural and have no singular form. These can be recognised as groups of single entities.
arms, cattle, crew, clothes, congratulations, contents, goods, groceries, manners, oats, outskirts, police, regards, remains, savings, staff, surroundings, thanks, troops
The police have appealed for witnesses.
Cattle are transported in special trucks.
But: I bought three cows at the market today. ( Not: I bought three cattle … )
Staff cannot be used with the indefinite article, but it can be preceded by a number
There are four staff on duty.
Words that are always singular
Singular words with no plural form are always singular uncountable nouns. To make them countable, expressions such as a piece of, a bottle of, a kilo of, or a litre of are used. There are, however, exceptions. Sometimes the same noun can be countable when it refers to a specific example or when the expression of quantity can be omitted.
Beer tastes better than wine.
It’s not a beer but a wine. ( referring to a type )
Would you like a coffee? ( referring to a cup of coffee )
To talk about quantity, much and little are used.
How much money do you have? Very little
Substances and materials
Oil, coal, gas, water, copper, gold, silver, glass, paper, timber, water, wool, cotton, silk, leather and linen are uncountable, singular nouns.
Gold is a good investment in times of economic recession.
A barrel of oil costs over $100.
Food
Chocolate, coffee, tea, wheat, barley, rice, corn, cheese, milk, bread, flour, fruit, sugar, pasta, spaghetti, beer and wine are uncountable, singular nouns.
Would you like some coffee?
I need a pint of milk, some cheese and a loaf of bread.
Abstract nouns
Time, life, experience, money, love, work, art, happiness, advice, travel and news are uncountable, singular nouns.
Life is short.
I don’t have much experience with Macs.
Could you give me a minute of your time?
The news is very distressing today.
Collections
Furniture, cutlery, media, luggage, baggage are uncountable, singular nouns.
18th century furniture is very expensive.
That’s a fine piece of furniture.
Your luggage is very heavy.
Illnesses
Most illnesses are singular uncountable nouns.
Measles, Mumps, flu, Bronchitis
German Measles ( Rubella ) is very
dangerous for pregnant women.
There’s a lot of flu around this winter.
However, some minor illnesses and complaints are countable.
Cold, headache, sore throat
Don’t go out without a coat or you’ll catch a cold.
My mother suffers from headaches.
Words ending in –ics
Even though they end in –s, these words are singular.
Economics, mathematics, ( maths BE, math AE ) physics, athletics
Mathematics is the most important subject at school.
Politics is the study of the government of a country.
However, sometimes politics can be plural:
What are your politics?
