In American courtroom dramas, the witness places his right hand on the Bible and says “I solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God.” It’s interesting to reflect upon the implication behind this oath – that people require a court of law, an elaborate ritual and the threat of eternal damnation to speak honestly.

Does this mean that everyone not taking this oath is somehow less truthful? Probably not. The frequency of perjury suggests that people are just as likely to lie in court as out of it. Everyday speech has lots of equivalents to the courtroom oath, but their use is dangerous because they undermine everything else we say: “To be honest,...”, “Frankly speaking,...”, “To tell you the truth,...” and “You can trust me when I tell you...” all imply that we are not normally telling the truth or being trustworthy. For similar reasons, it is wise to distrust anyone ( except your own mother ) who says: “Let me tell you a secret...” Secrets have power, but only as long as they stay secret. The moment a secret is revealed, it’s destroyed. That’s why magicians never explain illusions, and why James Bond’s classic answer to a request for confidential information is “If I told you that, I’d have to kill you!” Groucho Marx had this to say about telling the truth: “The secret of success in life is sincerity. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” Politicians of course being the best example of contemporary sincerity faking. Clive Crook, commenting in the Financial Times on the Clinton-Obama showdown in 2008, said: “Mrs Clinton tries hard to fake sincerity – so hard it is painful to watch.” Sometimes, in fact, I suspect that she really is sincere and only looks as though she’s faking. Barack Obama, on the other hand, may actually be sincere – and if he’s not, he fakes it so well it makes no difference.” As the truth is often uncomfortable, and occasionally fatal, lots of strategies have evolved for hiding it. Animals “lie” to confuse or hide from an enemy – for instance a bird pretends to be hurt to draw attention away from its nest, or a chameleon changes colour to merge into its surroundings. In recent politics, Nikolas Sarkozy, Vladimir Putin, and Hillary Clinton have each been labelled chameleons for their ability to assume different persona to suit the occasion. “...for most of the time she ( Hillary Clinton ) has switched from one false personality to another, often during the course of a single debate or interview. One moment she would be acting tough, the next warm; now aloof, now approachable; now a fun person, fond of a joke, now stern and serious.” Before you go, consider this provocative thought: what if Hillary had multiple personalities? Would she be insincere then? The outrageously gaudy entertainer Liberace once sued a London newspaper for hinting that he was gay. When asked in court “Have you ever indulged in homosexual practices?” He replied: “No, Sir, never in my life.” Liberace died of AIDS in 1987, but never let on that he had contracted the disease. He won that libel suit. But did he really lie? Liberace the performer aimed at gratifying the tastes of a conservative American majority, attracted by the glamour and wealth that was his professional trademark. The inconvenient truth of his actual sexual orientation belonged to a private Liberace, neatly separated from his public self. Maybe people taking oaths should rather say, “A part of me solemnly swears...”
